Film and the Black and White Medium

September 23rd, 2008 — 7:00pm

In the digital age traditional 35mm film has almost completely died out, and we’ve lost an incredible format. This summer I took a two week program on black and white film photography. While I already knew all about camera stuff and how incredible photography was, I had never experimented with film. I was born in the digital age, I hadn’t even loaded a roll into a camera until the program. In the digital age everything goes quickly, and we spend a lot of our time staring at an LCD screen until our eyes hurt. Film just doesn’t work like that. Getting one good print takes a lot more skill and a lot more time, but I also enjoy it more.

What makes it more fun? The physicality of it. Picking up the undeveloped photo paper in a darkroom with only an orange safety light and carrying it over to the chemistry and watching your photo magically appear out of nowhere. Little things that in Photoshop may have been instant or not even done at all become so much more incredible to perform. For instance, when you make a print you load your neg into an enlarger, which uses a lens to project the image onto photo paper. There’s a special tool for focusing this lens called the “Grain Focuser”. What this tool does is it reflects the light into your eye, basically making you see a super zoomed in version of the print. It was tricky at first to get it right, but once I got it, there was an incredible feeling of accomplishment, and it was worth it.

Black and white is also amazing, often we rely on great colours to make a fantastic photograph, by removing this part of our photos, we need to compensate with the other half to make a great photo. I ended up focusing a lot more on composition than anything else. Contrast in black and white film is also fantastic, and crisp, though beginner’s prints often turn out muddy due to their poor exposures. Black and white gave me great detail when I got my exposure right, and ended up just being an awesome format to work with.

There’s definite downsides to film, and for me, it’s really a bit of a novelty, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great format to work in, so, every once in awhile, I’ll probably be posting a few shots in Black and White film to my Flickr, so stay tuned.

Full Frame Bike In Your Backpack

March 12th, 2008 — 1:39pm

Full Size Folding Bicycle
Awesome. People, THIS is innovation! The “Urban Street Concept Bike” is a collaboration with Cube and Gregor Dauth. First revealed at Eurobike 2007 the full frame bike minimizes into something that will fit into your backpack. Check out the site for more images, though unfortunately, while the website is (mostly) in english, that specific page is not, however there is a video with subtitles in english.

68

March 3rd, 2008 — 5:49pm

Yes, 68 is the title of this post, but no, we aren’t talking about Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. We’re talking about blogs, and RSS, and why I love it. (I also love formatting :P). You’ve probably figured out that that means I have 68 blog posts to read. Well, 68 posts to skim through and find the good ones! At the top of the list was news.com at 21, core77.com with 12, and Macworld, also at 12. Hopefully, soon I’ll be able to post ALL of my RSS subscriptions to the blog. You know you can tell a lot about someone from their RSS feed subscriptions. On the same subject of RSS, what do you guys use as a reader? Personally I love NetNewsWire, though any would work as long as I can flag certain posts (in order to remind me to link to them). Don’t you just love RSS (except for the fact that it can totally destroy your social life)?

Silly Expression One - “Buck” or a Dollar

February 27th, 2008 — 2:12pm

What is with everyone using the expression “buck” as a dollar? Example: “Dude, Final Cut Express is like, 200 bucks!” Really, Final Cut Express is the price of 200 male deer? Never knew. How much would that be in dollars? Probably millions, I mean, going out and capturing 200 deer, and then if any of them weren’t male having to find more would probably take a lot of time and money, and probably violate animal rights, so I guess that would make it an illegal buck smuggling act? Maybe there’s a huge marketplace for that somewhere, like, I dunno, wherever ONLY male deer are needed. Yes, as the title suggested this is the first post in a series which looks into the deeper side of everyday expressions, see, this post really made you think, didn’t it? No? Well, it made me think…Of writing, and a deer in a golf shirt! *Chuckles* I guess that this series is partially about not taking things so seriously, but lets not make it more than it is.

Welcome!

February 23rd, 2008 — 12:15am

Yes, it’s opening day of the shop which sells opinions, news, chocolate, and the story of a kid who was bored, for free! Well, that doesn’t really work I guess…Unless you take out the shop part, and the (though I wish it could remain) the chocolate part, and turn the old man who stands at the counter all day and turn him into me. But then again, aren’t we all weird old men inside? No? Didn’t think so. Anyways, enough with my rants, allow me to introduce myself to you; I am Connor Bevans, and I am awesome. That’s basically all I’ve got. But this blog is all about me, me, meeeee! Well, and a whole lot of other stuff. But seriously, the blog is all about the latest in tech news, reviews, and previews, and of course, the best opinion in the world: Mine. Hey we’ll even sprinkle in other stuff for you! So how about it? Take a few minutes of your time each day and take in the warm embrace of death…Oh sorry, was I quoting Hannibal Lecter again, I have a thing about that…As, I was saying take a few minutes to enjoy the blog, subscribe, pop open a can of beer, and chillax.
